US substitute goalkeeper Ethan Horvath came on for injured goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the second half. He produced several great saves from the bench, including an incredible penalty kick from him. Seconds before the end of overtime, Mexico's Andres Guardado scored a try, but Horvath thwarted him in a dramatic twist. The referee went to the monitor a second time and awarded Mexico a penalty after Mark McKenzie had held up the ball. It took a superb save from Horvath's penalty kick to seal the deal in the dying moments of the game.
It looked like Mexico might have scored the winning goal in the 79th minute through substitute Diego Lainez, but the USMNT equalised three minutes later through a powerful header from Weston McKennie to make it 2-2. The United States equalised late in regulation time and then took the lead in overtime. In overtime, there was video evidence of a penalty incident and the ejection of Mexico manager Tata Martino for an incident in which fans threw projectiles at players, one of whom injured U.S. striker Gio Reyna.
